~ $ tty not working (Chapter 1)

I’m very unexperienced with Terminal so please bare with me.

I’ve followed the instructions in Chapter 1 but rather than an output similar to the book’s ‘/dev/ttys027’ my output is simply ‘-bash: /Users/Jan: is a directory’. The following steps like printing “hello debugger” and ‘process launch -e …’ will not work.
Certainly this should be a simple error on my side.

Any help appreciated!

EDIT: I can see the tty address in the Inspector’s Login section, entering the correct one will prompt the ‘hello debugger’ comment, but why could the ~ $ tty statement not work?
