There are two core platforms: iOS & Android. Globally, there are more Android users than iOS, but at the end of the day, it really is up to you, which one you prefer to work on. A general rule of thumb would be to use the platform that you are most inclined towards (which would mean which phone do you use) While Google is behind the Android iOS, Samsung is the manufacturer for the phones, while Apple is behind both the OS, as well as the hardware. Because of this, there is definitely better synergy in Apple’s products, and by extension, the entire ecosystem. The one major downside of using the Apple platform is that you absolutely pay a premium. Apple products are not cheap, so unless you already have a MacBook Pro, or are currently using an iPhone, I would suggest developing for the Android.
